Filing your personal taxes can be easier than it used to be. Unfortunately, what you could claim last year may not be the same this year. I have compiled a list of the common personal tax laws that have changed since last tax season on my website. I have also provided several tips that can help you get the biggest return possible without manipulating your tax forms. You can learn how to get the biggest return while following the IRS guidelines so you do not have to worry about tax audits or getting a penalty letter a few years after getting your check.

How To Make A Cat Tree Using Old Carpet

Business Blog

If you have a cat that loves to climb and claw everything, then you should get him a cat tree. The problem is that cat furniture can be expensive and your sweet kitty will only destroy it. Save money by making your own cat tree using leftover carpet from when you covered your home floors. The process is simple and doesn't take much construction skills.

What You Need:

  • Carpet
  • Carpet glue
  • String
  • PVC pipe
  • 3/4-inch thick particle board
  • 1/2-inch thick board
  • 4 L brackets
  • Screws
  • Right angle drill

Build the Furniture

  1. Drill two of the L brackets inside one end of the PVC pipe so that they sit directly across from each other inside the tube and so that the other end sticks out perpendicular to the tube on the outside.
  2. Place the tube on the center of the 1/2-inch board so that the L brackets on the outside of the PVC pipe sit on top of the board.
  3. Drill the L brackets to the board using the screws.
  4. Repeat step one with the last two L brackets but this time drill them into the other end of the PVC pipe.
  5. Attach the pipe to the 3/4-inch particle board the same way you attached the other end to the 1/2-inch board.

Cover the Furniture

  1. Slather carpet glue all over the PVC pipe.
  2. Wrap the carpet around the PVC pipe.
  3. Wrap the string around the carpet as many times as possible. This helps hold the carpet in place while it dries.
  4. Once dry, remove the string.
  5. Glue a piece of carpet to the top of the 1/2-inch thick board.

Tips and Tricks

  • Right angle drills make it possible to drill inside the tight space of the PVC pipe.
  • You want the boards to be at least four inches longer on each side than the PVC pipe is wide. For example, if your PVC pipe is 2-inches wide, then you want a board that sticks out four inches on each side when the pipe is placed in the middle. That means you want a board that is 10-inches by 10-inches.
  • The thicker the PVC pipe, the sturdier the cat stand and the more the cat has to claw.
  • Particle board is heavy and works best for the bottom of the cat tree. Regular boards are lighter and work best for the top so that it won't topple over.
  • Use any thin carpet. Avoid the fluffy, thick kind.

Your cat will love the new toy and you won't cringe every time he claws holes in it because you hardly spent any money or time making it.
